Understanding this warning requires us to ask four questions:

1.  Who is he talking about?
     The writer identifies two groups:
       •  The deserters
       •  The dedicated

2.  Where did things go awry?
       •  The road to apostasy isn't done in a single step but a slow
           and subtle journey away from God.

3.  Why is God so angry?

4.  What are we to do with this scary admonition?
       •  Don't let trials make you spiritually bitter; use them to make
           you spiritually better.
       •  Get serious about your growth — God's not playing games.
       •  Make Christ your priority so that you can live in total peace.
