Around 40 Excited 6th Graders

Posted by Dave Mogle on

Hello from the Philippines,

We have entered Day 2 of the English Camp and have found it smoother going now that we have a day of experience behind us. Yesterday, around 40 excited 6th graders, chattering away in their native tongue, arrived at English Camp at Faith Academy. Our mission had begun! I think all of us probably detected a bit of uncertainty and nervousness amongst the students. Maybe they detected the same in us. So, Day 1 was all about gaining trust and getting to know one another.

That process included included singing, led by our team's worship leaders. That is where we noticed an easing of jitters. The students love singing. It is evident that they do this in school. They know the lyrics (in English) to some of the songs we are accustomed to singing during our own worship times. The theme song of Camp is "You are our Creator."

A few fun games helped set the tone that learning English was not going to be boring. Then they broke up in to their groups, with each of the four groups led by two teachers. Your VBC team are separated as follows: Jenn Kuryliw and Kristin Waweru taking a group and Larura Waweru and Deb Mogle taking another group.

The other two groups are being led by our non VBC teammates,Sue and Zac, and Amy and Bonnie.

The students have recreational time during each day along with daily swimming in Faith Academy's pool. Pastor Lloyd, a young man from the area gives a Bible message each afternoon speaking of our need for Jesus and the salvation he gives through faith. He does this in his and the kids' native tongue to be sure they are understanding the importance of what he is saying.

Mostly, we want to tell you of the kids. They range in age from 10 to 15 years old. They are typical for their age, within the context of Philippine culture. They are energetic, upbeat, and very chatty. They endear us to themselves with little effort. But, they are poor and several carry burdens one would hope no child should have to bear. Today we learned of Jayra, one of several students who lost her home in the fire a few weeks ago. Jayra is 12 and may have to go to work to help with family income. She came to Camp sad today. We also learned of another student whose father died just two months ago. The kids are opening up to their teachers. We hope it is because they see the love of Christ in us, and that we truly care.

Day 2 ended with an increased bonding between Camp worker and student. God is at work! All of us sense it. Christ is being glorified. Please keep us in your prayers.

Thank you.

Your Philippine Team,
