Visiting kids at Makerere Primary School in Kampala

Posted by Kate Duff on

We didn't expect to be able to visit the Juna Amagara children in Kampala that are sponsored by Village Bible Church.  Our schedule was tight.  The kids were about to break for holiday.  And they were busy taking exams.  (They have year-round school.  So this was the end of Term 1 that began in January.)  Thankfully, we were able to squeeze in a quick visit with 10 of Village Bible Church's sponsored kids in Kampala.  Yippeee!!!

We drew quite the crowd of kids, when we pulled up in our van and got out in the school yard.  Debbie, the school social worker, found 10 of the children we had letters for and brought them to us.  I have learned by this point, that these children don't normally receive gifts.  They may have never even received a birthday present.  So they are a combination of nervous, anxious, and excited when we present them with their letters and gifts.

First we met Jessica who is sponsored by Deb Meyer.  She was so thrilled to receive her letter and a few fun things.  I asked, and her favorite color is Pink.  I gave her a high-5, since that's MY favorite color, too!  And she was on Cloud 9.
Next I met Trevor sponsored by Brad Lawson.  He was nervous & shy.  But you could tell that he was pleased with his new clothes and other things from Brad.  And Brad put a United States map on his letter, showing Trevor where we live in Illinois.  That was great!
Next we met Sam, he is sponsored by Ruperto & Elizabeth Herrera who go to Crossfit with Keith.  He was thrilled to see his sponsor's picture.  We gave him a Superman pencil set, too.  (Thanks to Weston's Caring Kids Club!)
Esther was next.  She is sponsored by Mark & Debbie Ferris.  She also liked seeing the pictures of her sponsors and their daughters.
Anne & Darin Malone sponsor Gloria.  She was so excited to receive their letter and some candy and pencils.  She lit right up when she opened it!
Brenda is sponsored by David & Greta Abel.  The alphabet beads were a fun gift for her.  She loved seeing family pictures and the girls' coloring pages.  And I put the Rainbow Loom bracelet right on her wrist.  Thanks, Allie!   I showed her how to put on the purple sling backpack - and showed her that it was just like the one I was wearing.  She was shy, yet she just glowed with excitement to see who her sponsor was and to receive gifts from the Abel family.
Lisa met Desire who is sponsored by John & Karen Elwood.  What a cutie!!!  She will have the cleanest teeth in town with all that toothpaste!  Way to go, Karen!  And thanks for the pictures, Joshua & Kaleb, she will treasure them!
Isaac is sponsored by Darrel & Lisa Brown.  Lisa O'Brien talked with him & gave him his letter, coloring pages, and some pencils.
We didn't have a letter for Alexander, sponsored by Matt Zambrano, but we gave him a Superman pencil set, just to show him that he's special.  Indeed he is!
Last we met Wycliff, another child sponsored by Darin & Anne Malone.  He was thrilled to receive his letter and gift.  Candy & pencils make a happy boy!
