The Obligation to Live by the Spirit | Part 5

Passage: Romans 5:5-17

Preacher: Joel Badal

Series:Invisible War

Detail:

1.  A life controlled by the sinful nature is in hostility with God
and ends in death (vv. 5-6, 7-8).
     This life is characterized by...
        A.  Opposition to God's work (3:11-18).
        B.  Evil and unrighteousness (1:31-32).
        C.  A lack of peace with God (v.6).

2.  A converted life in union with Christ and the Spirit is when
the mind is renewed (vv. 4-6, 9-11).
        A.  A resurrected life of sonship will "do the right thing" (v.4).
        B.  A resurrected life of sonship inherits "a new position"
             (vv. 3, 4-6).
        C.  A resurrected life has a new mind of life and peace in the
             Spirit (v.5; Romans 12:1-2).

3.  A resurrected life of sonship is one that fulfills the righteous
obligation both to the Law and a Spirit-filled life (Romans 7:14; vv. 7-12).
        A.  The obligation "to put to death the flesh" and the "misdeeds" of our
nature fulfills our union with Christ and the Spirit (v. 13).
        B.  The obligation "to walk by the Spirit" calls us to a new position and
fulfills God's righteous standard in us (v. 14).

Why is the obligation encouraging to the Church?
        1.  We don't have to fear the slavery of sin (vv. 15, 21).
        2.  We can enjoy our new family (vv. 12, 16).
        3.  We can pray in a new way (v. 15).
        4.  We can have assurance of our standing in God's family (v. 17).
        5.  We can enjoy our inheritance.
        6.  We will suffer for Christ's name (v. 17).
        7.  We will await a future glory (vv. 17, 23).
