Hope for the Home (Part 18)

    Passage: Mark 10:1-12

    Preacher: Travis Fleming

    Series:Man at Work

    Summary:

Mark is fascinated with two qualities of Jesus that he gives to us in the first words of this gospel: "The beginning of the gospel about Jesus Christ, the Son of God" (Mark 1:1). Jesus of Nazareth, a carpenter, the human Jesus—but also the Son of God, the divine one. Mark seems to be fascinated by that combination: the Ruler who manifests His ability to serve, and the Servant who knows how to rule.

    Detail:

There is a battle for the home going on in the land, but there's hope!
Hope is found when we understand that...

    1.  Defining marriage belongs to God alone and not a committee

         This involves its...

              A.  Origin

                   1.  It started at creation
                   2.  Involved a defined couple (male and female)
                   3.  Who complemented each other

              B.  Order of events

                   The order involves...

                   1.  Leaving parents' house
                   2.  Uniting in holy matrimony
                   3.  Cleaving on the honeymoon
                   4.  Creating a new home

              C.  Obligation

                   1.  Marriage is a covenant, not a contract
                   2.  And is to be permanent, not just a period of time

    2.  Dissolving a marriage is allowable in certain circumstances

         These involve...

              A.  Death of a spouse
              B.  Desertion by an unbelieving spouse
              C.  Defiling of the marriage bond through unrepentant sexual
                    immorality

*While it is true that these three allowances are biblical, remarriage is
never commanded, but it is always a concession in Scripture.

    3.  Divorcing one's spouse for unbiblical reasons and marrying another is
          considered to be adultery

    4.  Declaring war on divorce and celebrating marriage is at the heart of God!
